About Dana

Deaf ASL Instructor & Community Builder

Hi, my name is Dana DeGroff. I was born deaf. I am married to my husband, Craig, who is also deaf. We have two children, my son Russell who is 9 years old and my daughter Tanya who is 16 years old. They both learned sign language from us when they were young. We all communicate through American Sign Language along with our family.

Among my relatives, I am the only deaf member in the family. Growing up, communication was difficult and presented obstacles for me. I attended oral, deaf group, deaf school, and public school, which wasn't easy due to moving between states and experiencing different language cultures. I had strong ASL fluency with deaf and hearing teachers from the Washington State School for the Deaf for 5 years. Transitioning to a hearing school, there were interpreters in the class who used a signing mix of ASL and English. Later in life, I had to relearn my ASL skills to adapt to modern communication. Additionally, I gained a few years of teaching experience through Southern Utah Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Iron County, Utah. Teaching ASL fluency has become my expertise. It is a beautiful language for me as I strive to learn new modern-day languages through my teaching with you.
